Tips & Hints
The block for April is a variation of 290 in Barbara Brackman's book. It's called Parquetry. We're going to do this in bright batiks or hand dyed looking fabrics with an ecru on ecru background. Be sure you're using ecru on ecru and not white on white. The April block will be 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for April.
There are no cutting directions printed from EQ7 this month, because there are not many different patches for this block. For two blocks: cut 4 - 4" x 4" batik square and 4 4" x 4" ecru on ecru squares (these are for the half square triangle units. Cut 8 - 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" batik square, 4 - 2" x 2" batik squares and 4 - 2" x " ecru on ecru squares.
Place a batik 4" x 4" square right sides together with an ecru on ecru square of the same size (in the case of batiks there is no right or wrong side so pick the side you like best to be the right side). Draw a light pencil line from corner to opposite corner on the ecru on ecru fabric. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on either side of the line. Cut on the line and press the seam toward the batik side. Trim these units to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". I like to use a bias square ruler to trim these. Repeat for the remaing 4" squares. You will have a total of eight units for two blocks.
Sew a 2" x 2" batik square to a 2" x 2" ecru on ecru square. Press toward the batik square. Repeat. Join these with the squares in the opposite corners. (See block graphic above.) Press toward the batik squares. The middle seam should release so that you will have a tiny four-patch on the wrong side of the unit. Repeat for the second block.
Join a batik 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" square between two half square triangle units. The batik triangle will face toward the upper left and right corners. (See block graphic above.) Press toward the batik square. Repeat for the third row. Join a four patch unit between two 4" x 4" batik squares. The ecru on ecru squares in the four patch will be in the upper right and lower left positions. Press toward the large batik squares. Join these three rows to form your block, flipping the third row to be opposite the first row. (See block graphic above.)
Repeat for the second block. The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for April. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.
