August 2011 Block

30's Butterfly

Tips & Hints

The block for August is a variation of 924.6 in Barbara Brackman's book (Kate's Butterfly). The winner could embroider antennas on their butterflies. This block uses a 30's print, a black print and the Moda Best Natural Swirls fabric. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for August.

Cutting directions for ONE block are below:

NumberSizeFabric
23 1/2" x 3 1/2"30's print
14" x 4"30's print
22 3/4" x 2 3/4"30's print
13 1/2" x 3 1/2"black print
11 1/2" x 1 1/2"black print
11 1/2" x 2 1/2"Natural Swirls
33 1/2" x 3 1/2"Natural Swirls
14" x 4"Natural Swirls
12 1/2" x 3 1/2"Natural Swirls

Sew the 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" black print square to one end of the 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" swirls rectangle. Press towards the black square. Sew the 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" swirls rectangle to the right side of the previous unit. The black square is at the lower left of the unit. See block graphic above. Press towards the larger swirls rectangle. Repeat for the second block.

For the first row, sew a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" swirls square to the left side of a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" 30's print square. Sew the unit from the previous step to the right side of the 30's print square. Press the seams towards the 30's print square. Repeat for the second block.

Place a 4" x 4" 30's print square right sides together with a natural swirls square of the same size. Draw a light pencil line from corner to opposite corner on the wrong side of the natural fabric and sew a scant quarter inch seam on both sides of the line. Cut on the line and press the seams toward the 30's fabric. Trim these units to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2", making sure that the seams come out exactly at the corners. These are your half square triangle units. Repeat for the second block.

Place a 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" 30's print square right sides together with the 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" black print square, lining it up to one corner. Draw a light pencil line from corner to opposite corner. These are the corners that are even with the two adjoining sides of the black square. Sew along the line and press the square back on itself to form a snowball corner. Trim the seam to 1/4". Repeat for the opposite corner. This is the butterfly's body. For the second row, sew this unit between a half square triangle unit that was made in the previous paragraph and a 30's print square. See block graphic above. It's really easy to get the triangle units going the wrong way. Press away from the butterfly body. Repeat for the second block

Sew the other half square triangle unit between two 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" swirls squares. Press towards the half square triangle unit. Repeat for the second block. Sew your three rows together, matching seams. Press away from the middle row. Repeat for the second block.

The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for August. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month.
