Tips & Hints

Welcome back to the 2011 Block of the Month. Thanks for your understanding while we took a break in 2010 and reprised some of our favorite blocks from the past. This year we're going to feature blocks designed by our swap members. This block was designed by Liz Godfrey and is called Wyoming Beauty. This block uses the Moda Swirls Natural fabric and a deep blue print. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. You will be making two blocks for January.

Cutting directions for ONE block is below:

NumberSizeFabric
92" x 2"Natural Swirls
15 1/2" x 5 1/2"Natural Swirls
92" x 2"Blue Print
15 1/2" x 5 1/2"Blue Print

Make a nine patch unit by sewing the 2" blue print and natural swirls squares together. The first row consists of two natural swirls squares sewed together with a blue print square sewed on the left. Press away from the middle square. The second row has the blue print square in the middle with a natural swirls square on each side. Press towards the blue print square. The third row is the same as the first row, flipped the opposite way. Join the three rows. Press away from the middle row. (See block graphic above for correct placement.) .

Make another nine patch unit with three natural swirls squares and six blue print squares. The coloring will be the opposite of the previous unit. Press the same as the previous unit. You could also use a 3 1/2" x 2" rectangle instead of sewing two squares of the same color together.

Place the 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" squares right sides together. Draw a light pencil line from one corner to the opposite corner on the lighter fabric. Sew a scant quarter inch seam on each side of the line. Cut on the line and press each unit toward the blue print. Trim to 5" x 5" using a bias square ruler or similar tool. Sew the first nine patch unit to the left of one half square triangle unit. The blue squares in the nine patch unit go from the upper left to the lower right corner. The natural swirls triangle, in the half square triangle unit, is in the upper left position and the blue triangle is in the lower right position. Press seam towards the half square triangle unit.

Sew the second nine patch unit to the right side of the other half square triangle unit. The natural swirls squares in the nine patch unit go from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. The natural swirls triangle, in the half square triangle unit, is in the upper left position and the blue triangle is in the lower right position. Press towards the half square triangle unit.

Join the two rows together matching the placement in the block graphic above. Press the seam open. Repeat for the second block. The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. Please mail your blocks so they will be received by Patty before the end of the month. Include a Priority Mail stamp and an address label with your January blocks.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo PClassic BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
