October 2009 Block

Eccentric Star

Tips & Hints

For October we are doing a variation of the Friendship Star block called Eccentric Star. It's 1683b in Barbara Brackman's book. Use a batik print fabric and the Moda Swirls Windsor fabric. You will be making ONE block for October. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished.

Cutting directions for ONE block is below:

NumberSizeFabric
44" x 4"Windsor Swirls
13 1/2" x 3 1/2"Batik
44" x 4"Batik

Make half-square triangle units by placing a 4" x 4" square of Windsor and Batik right sides together. Draw a light pencil line on the wrong side of the Batik and sew a scant 1/4" seam on either side of the line. Cut on the line and press toward the darker fabric. Trim to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" with the seam going from one corner to the opposite corner. Make a total of eight units.

Sew three of the half square triangle units together for the first row. The first two units will have the batik triangle in the upper right corner and the third one will have the batik in the lower right corner. (See block graphic above.) Press seams away from the center unit. Repeat for the third row. (Note: this row will be flipped 180 degrees.) Sew a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" batik square between two half square triangle units. The left unit will have the batik triangle in the upper left corner and the right unit will have the batik triangle in the lower right corner. Press seams toward the center square.

Sew the three rows together, matching opposing seams. See block graphic above for correct placement. Press toward the center row.

We are making ONE block for October. The block is 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your block. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. Postage goes up every year in May and this year was no exception. If you have not won a set of blocks, please send Patty some extra postage. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed. If you are having trouble finding the common Moda Swirls Windsor and Natural background fabrics, please email Patty. This is the background fabric we're using this year, in order to have some consistency to the blocks. No other background fabric is acceptable.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo PClassic BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
