June 2009 Block

Ribbon

Tips & Hints

For June we are doing a traditional block called Ribbon Quilt. It's 1675 in Barbara Brackman's book. Use two small to medium density floral prints that contrast with the Moda Swirls Windsor fabric. You will be making TWO blocks for June. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished.

Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
44" x 4"Floral 1
44" x 4"Floral 2
84" x 4"Windsor Swirls
23 1/2" x 3 1/2"Windsor Swirls

Place a 4" x 4" Floral 1 print square right sides together with a 4" x 4" Windsor Swirls square. Draw a line diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner on the back of the lighter fabric. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the line. Cut on the line and press the seam to the darker fabric. Square up to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2", making sure the seam is exactly lined up with two opposite corners. Make a total of eight of these half square triangle units, four per block. Repeat the previous instructions with the Floral 2 print squares and Windsor Swirls squares.

For the first row, sew a Floral 1 and Windsor half square triangle between two half Floral 2 and Windsor half square triangle units. On the right side, the Floral 2 triangle is in the upper right position and on the left side, the Floral 2 triangle is in the upper left position. The Floral 1 triangle of the middle unit is in the lower right position.(See block graphic above.) Press the seams away from the middle unit. Repeat for the third row. This row is the same as row one, except it will be flipped 180 degrees (the Floral 2 triangle on the right will be in the lower right postion, the one on the left will be in the lower left position and the Floral 1 triangle in the middle unit will be in the upper left position).

For the second row, sew a Windsor 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" square between two Floral 1 half square triangle units. The Floral 1 triangle in the right unit will be in the lower left position and the Floral 1 triangle in the left unit will be in the upper right position. Press the seams toward the middle square. Sew row two between rows one and three, matching seams. (See block graphic above for correct placement.) Press towards the second row. Repeat for the second block.

We are making TWO blocks for June. The blocks are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. Postage goes up every year in May and this year was no exception. If you have not won a set of blocks, please send Patty some extra postage. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed. If you are having trouble finding the common Moda Swirls Windsor and Natural background fabrics, please email Patty. This is the background fabric we're using this year, in order to have some consistency to the blocks. No other background fabric is acceptable.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo PClassic BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
