April 2009 Block

Tea Leaves

Tips & Hints

For April we are doing a traditional block called Tea Leaves. It's 1734 in Barbara Brackman's book. Use fabrics that remind you of the color of tea leaves. I did my sample quilt with different shades of brown, but maybe some of you drink tea made from tea leaves of different colors. The background is Moda Swirls Natural fabric (that's the tan one). You will be making TWO blocks for April. The blocks this year are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished.

Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
44" x 4"Tea Leaf Colors
63 1/2" x 3 1/2"Tea Leaf Colors
44" x 4"Natural Swirls
43 1/2" x 3 1/2"Natural Swirls

Place a 4" x 4" Tea Leaf Color print square right sides together with a 4" x 4" Natural Swirls square. Draw a line diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the line. Cut on the line and press the seam to the darker fabric. Square these up to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2", making sure the seam is exactly lined up with two opposite corners. Make a total of eight of these half square triangle units, four per block.

For the first row, sew a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" Tea Leaf Color square between a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" Natural Swirls square and a half square triangle unit from the previous paragraph. The darker triangle in the half square triangle unit is in the lower left position and the lighter triangle is in the upper right position. (See block graphic above.) Press toward the middle square.

For the second row, sew two of the Tea Leaf Color squares together and then a half square triangle unit, in the same orientation as in the previous paragraph. Press away from the middle square. Join the two rows, matching seams. The seams will go in opposite directions, making it easier to match up the seams.

For the third row, sew two half square triangle units together. The dark triangle is in the upper right position and the light triangle is in the lower left position. (See block graphic above.) Sew a Natural Swirls square to the right side of the previous unit. Press toward the middle unit. Join to the bottom of the second row as before. Press seams toward the middle row. Repeat for the second block.

We are making TWO blocks for April. The blocks are 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. Be sure you include your Priority stamp and address label along with your blocks if you haven't already sent them. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed. If you are having trouble finding the common Moda Swirls Windsor and Natural background fabrics, please email Patty. This is the background fabric we're using this year, in order to have some consistency to the blocks. No other background fabric is acceptable.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo PClassic BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
