May 2008 Block

Ivy Leaf

Tips & Hints

For May we are doing a leaf block. It's number 1273 in the Barbara Brackman book and has several names, including Rosebud and Maple Leaf. For some reason I think that Ivy Leaf would be a good name for our block. The fabrics used are a medium or dark green print, dark tan or light brown print (make sure your prints contrast well with the sweet green) and Moda Marble Sweet Green for the background. You will be making TWO blocks for May.

Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
83" x 3"Tan Print
44 7/8" x 4 7/8"Green Print
83" x 3"Sweet Green Moda
42 7/8" x 2 7/8"Sweet Green Moda
46 7/8" x 6 7/8"Sweet Green Moda

Place a sweet green 3"x3" square right sides togther with a tan square of the same size. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on either side of the line and cut along the line. Press the unit with the seam toward the tan fabric. Trim the unit to 2 1/2" square. Repeat three more times for a total of eight units for the first block. Sew two of the previous units together, matching the block graphic for correct placement. Press the seam open.

Cut the 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" sweet green squares into triangles by cutting diagonally once. (You may want to cut your squares a little larger if you like to trim them back down to size after sewing.) Sew a sweet green triangle to the side of the previous unit with the tan triangle. Press toward the sweet green triangle. Cut the 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" green squares into triangles by cutting diagonally once. Sew a green triangle to the bottom of the previous units.(See block graphic above for correct placement.) Press toward the green triangle. Repeat three times more for a total of four units for the first block. Cut the 6 7/8" x 6 7/8" sweet green squares into triangles by cutting diagonally once. Sew a large sweet green triangle to each of the previous units, forming a square which should measure 6 1/2" x 6 1/2". Press toward the large sweet green triangle.

Sew two of the previous units together, pressing toward the large sweet green triangle. Repeat. Sew these two rows together to form your block. Press toward the large sweet green triangle. Twirl the seam at the center of the block back to form a small pinwheel. Repeat all steps for the second block.

We are making TWO blocks for May. The blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. By now you should have sent your Priority stamp and label to Patty. Priority Mail is going up May 12th. It's going up another 20 cents if the package is 1 pound or less. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed. If you are having trouble finding the common Sweet Green Moda Marble background, please email Patty. This is the background fabric we're using this year, in order to have some consistency to the blocks. No other background fabric is acceptable.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
