April 2008 Block

Floral Centerpiece

Tips & Hints

For April we are doing a basket of flowers block. It's number 751 in the Barbara Brackman book and called Floral Centerpiece. Isn't that a great name?? The fabrics used are two floral prints, a medium green, two contrasting prints for the basket (brown and tan or gold would be nice) and Moda Marble Sweet Green for the background. You will be making THREE blocks for April. One is a thank you block for Margo.

Cutting directions for THREE blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
33" x 3"Floral Print 1
93" x 3"Sweet Green Moda
33" x 3"Brown Print
33" x 3"Tan or Gold Print
33 11/16" x 3 11/16"Sweet Green Moda
68 1/2" x 2 1/2"Sweet Green Moda
24 7/8" x 4 7/8"Sweet Green Moda
33 3/8" x 3 3/8"Medium Green Print
33 3/8" x 3 3/8"Brown Print
33 1/2" x 3 1/2"Brown Print
33 1/2" x 3 1/2"Tan or Gold Print
122 1/4" x 2 1/4"Floral Print 2
122 1/4" x 4 3/8"Floral Print 1
32 7/8" x 2 7/8"Brown Print

Sew two 3" x 3" Sweet Green squares right sides together, using a scant quarter inch seam. (You could also use a 5 1/2" x 3" rectangle if you prefer.) Press seam to one side. Sew a 3" x 3" Sweet Green square and a Floral Print 1 square of the same size together. Join this to the previous unit, with the seams going in opposite directions to make it easier to match up the seams. Press seam open, to one side, or so all seams are going in the same direction and a tiny four patch forms where the seams meet on the wrong side. This unit should measure 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". If it doesn't, check your seam allowances. Cut a brown 2 7/8" x 2 7/8" square in half diagonally. Sew each of these triangles to one end of a Sweet Green 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle. See block graphic above. The triangles are sewn on so the units are a mirror image of each other. Press toward the Sweet Green rectangle.

Cut a 3 11/16" x 3 11/16" Sweet Green square in half diagonally twice. Sew one triangle to adjoining sides of a 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" Floral Print 2 square. See block graphic above for correct placement. Press toward the Sweet Green triangles. Set aside the remaining trianges for the other unit in the block. Place two 2 1/4" x 4 3/8" rectangles right sides together. Trim off one corner at a 45 degree angle or measure 2 1/4" in from the end and draw a diagonal line to cut on. You may want to stay stitch this side 1/8" from edge, since it is on the bias. These units need to be right sides together when cutting, as they are mirror images of each other. Sew one of these units to the right side of the previous unit. See block graphic above for correct placement. Press toward the Floral Print 1 rectangle. Sew a 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" Floral Print 2 square to the straight end of the other unit. Press away from the Floral Print 2 square. Join this to the previous unit, matching the seams which should be presssed in opposite directions. Press toward the unit with the two Floral Print patches.

Cut a 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" Medium Green square in half diagonally. Sew one triangle to the lower left side of the previous unit. See block graphic above for correct placement. Cut a 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" Brown Print square in half diagonally. Sew one triangle to the lower right side. Press toward the green and brown triangles. This unit should measure 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" square. Repeat the previous steps for the other unit in the block, but the placement of the green and brown triangles is reversed. Sew the first unit to the right side of the four patch unit from the first paragraph. Press toward the four patch unit.

Place a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" brown square right sides together with a tan or gold square of the same size. Draw a diagonal line from one corner diagonally to the opposite corner on the wrong side of the lighter fabric. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the drawn line. Repeat. Cut on the drawn line and press toward the brown triangle. Join a brown 3" x 3" square to the side of one of the previous units (see block graphic above). Sew a tan or gold 3" x 3" square to one side of the other half square triangle unit. Press toward the squares. Join these two units, matching the seams. This unit should measure 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". Sew this unit to the other floral unit. Press away from the floral unit. Join this to the four patch and floral units that were previously joined, matching the seams, which should be pressed in opposite directions. Press seam open or as you prefer. Sew the Sweet Green rectangle units to the right and bottom of this unit (see block graphic above for correct placement.) Cut a 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" Sweet Green square in half diagonally. Sew this to the diagonal side of the previous unit on the lower right corner. Press toward the Sweet Green triangle. Repeat previous steps for a total of three block. You will have one Sweet Green triangle left over.

We are making THREE blocks for April. The blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. By now you should have sent your Priority stamp and label to Patty. Priority Mail is going up May 12th. It's going up another 20 cents if the package is 1 pound or less. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed. If you are having trouble finding the common Sweet Green Moda Marble background, please email Patty. This is the background fabric we're using this year, in order to have some consistency to the blocks. No other background fabric is acceptable.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
