March 2008 Block

Spring Posies

Tips & Hints

For March we are doing a Spring Posies block. The colors are two prints in a light and dark pastel shade, a green print, a gold or yellow print and the Moda Marble Sweet Green for the background. You will be making THREE blocks for March. One is a thank you block for Patty.

I'm giving you foundation patterns for this month's block, because I think that's the easiest way to construct it. If you would prefer cutting directions click here. The foundation pattern is here. Both will open up in a new window. When printing the foundation pattern, be sure that page scaling is set to none. There's a 1" square on the page. Measure this to make sure you've printed the pattern the correct size. I've included a template for the corner triangles and the center square.

Once you have completed the four foundations (remove the paper and press if needed) for each block, you will put them together with the yellow center square. Place the yellow print square even with the corner where the dark and light pastel triangles meet and right sides together. The yellow square will be sewn to the dark pastel triangle from the corner of the yellow square to half way down the side of the yellow square. This is your partial seam. Press toward the yellow square. Line the next foundation piece up with the side that was formed with the previous seam. These edges should be the same length. Sew a regular seam and press toward the center. Repeat again. On the last side you will see why the partial seam was necessary. Sew the seam up to and a little past the partial seam to make sure it's anchored. All the seams are pressed toward the yellow square.

Sew the corner sweet green triangles on the block. You may want to cut them a little larger than the template and square them up when they're sewed on. Press toward the corner triangles.

Repeat all previous instructions for the second and third blocks.

We are making THREE blocks for March. The blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. Be sure to include your Priority stamp and/or mailing label with your February blocks if you forgot in January. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed. If you are having trouble finding the common Sweet Green Moda Marble background, please email Patty. This is the background fabric we're using this year, in order to have some consistency to the blocks. No other background fabric is acceptable.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
