Tips & Hints
For February we are doing a variation of the Alabama block in two shades of pink or rose and Sweet Green Moda Marble. You will be making TWO blocks for February.
Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:
Place a 2" x 2" Dark Rose square right sides together with a Light Rose square of the same size. Sew with a scant 1/4" seam. Press toward the Dark Rose. Repeat once more. Sew the two units together, with the Dark Rose and Light Rose alternating. (See block graphic above, center square unit.) Press toward the Light Rose, forming a tiny four-patch in the center of the back or press open. Sew a 2" x 3 1/2" Sweet Green rectangle to each side of the previous unit. Press towards the sweet green rectangles. Sew a Light Rose Square to each end of a 2" x 3 1/2" Sweet Green rectangle. Press toward the Sweet Green rectangle. Repeat. Sew these to the top and bottom of the previous unit, matching seams (which should be pressed in opposite directions, making it easier to match up the seams). Press away from the center.
Sew a 2" x 6 1/2" Dark Rose rectangle to both sides of the previous unit. Press towards the Dark Rose rectangle. Sew a Light Rose square on each end of a 2" x 6 1/2" Dark Rose rectangle. Press toward the Dark Rose rectangle. Repeat. Sew these to the top and bottom of the previous unit and press toward the Dark Rose rectangle units. Sew a 2" x 9 1/2" Sweet Green rectangle to each side of the previous unit. Sew a Light Rose square on each end of a 2" x 9 1/2" rectangle. Press toward the Sweet Green rectangle. Repeat. Sew these units to the top and bottom of the previous unit. Press toward the Sweet Green rectangle unit. (See block graphic above for correct placement.)
Repeat all previous instructions for the second block.
We are making TWO blocks for February. The blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. Be sure to include your Priority stamp and/or mailing label with your February blocks if you forgot in January. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed. If you are having trouble finding the common Sweet Green Moda Marble background, please email Patty. This is the background fabric we're using this year, in order to have some consistency to the blocks. No other background fabric is acceptable.
