January 2008 Block

Polar Bear's Paw

Tips & Hints

For January we are doing a variation of the Bear's Paw block in a woven plaid or homespun and the Sweet Green Moda Marble. You will be making TWO blocks for January.

Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
44 1/2" x 4 1/2"Woven Plaid
44 1/2" x 4 1/2"Moda Marble Sweet Green
42 1/2" x 2 1/2"Woven Plaid
42 1/2" x 2 1/2"Moda Marble Sweet Green
164" x 4"Woven Plaid
164" x 4"Moda Marble Sweet Green

Place a 3" x 3" Moda Marble Sweet Green square right sides together with a Woven Plaid square of the same size. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner. Sew a scant quarter inch on each side of the line. Cut on the line and press the two units toward the plaid. Trim to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", making sure the seam goes from corner to opposite corner. Repeat with the remaining 3" x 3" squares. You will have a total of thrity-two half-square triangle units, sixteen for each block. Sew the half-square triangle units together in pairs, matching the placement as in the block graphic above. Two of the paws have green "claws" and two of the paws have plaid "claws". Press seams toward the plaid on the plaid claws units and toward the green on the green claws units.

Sew a plaid claws unit to one side of a plaid 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" square. Press toward the large square. Repeat for the rest of the plaid squares. Sew a green claws units to one side of a green 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" square. Press toward the large square. Repeat for the rest of the green squares. See block graphic for correct placement. It's really easy to get one of the "claws" going in the wrong direction, so lay all the pieces to your blocks out, pick up two to sew together, press and return them to the layout. This will help you keep things straight. The other claw units have a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square sewed to one end, a green square for the plaid claw units and a plaid square for the green claw units. Press toward the squares. These units go on the side adjacent to the previous claw units. See block graphic for correct placement. Press toward the large squares.

You will now have four of these paw units for each block, two of each kind. Sew a green square unit to a plaid square unit. Press toward the plaid. Repeat for the second row. Sew these two rows together, again, checking the block graphic for correct placement. Repeat for the second block.

We are making TWO blocks for January. The blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. Be sure to include your Priority stamp and mailing label with your January blocks. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
