November 2007 Block

Sunshine & Shadows

Tips & Hints

For November we are doing another "Blast From the Past" block. This was the August 1998 block, before we had our own website. Use assorted light and dark background florals or other similar prints and of course, your Moda Marble Black. I didn't have enough dark background florals so one of my squares is a dark background with cats on it. Your dark backgrounds should be either black or dark navy. :-) You will be making TWO blocks for November.

Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
123 1/2" x 3 1/2"Dark Background Floral
123 1/2" x 3 1/2"Light Background Floral
44" x 4"Light Background Floral
44" x 4"Moda Marble Black

Place a 4" x 4" Moda Marble Black square right sides together with a Light Background Floral square of the same size. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner. Sew a scant quarter inch on each side of the line. Cut on the line and press the two units toward the black triangle. Trim to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2", making sure the seam goes from corner to opposite corner. You will now have two half-square triangle units. Repeat three more times for a total of eight units, four units per block.

Sew three 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" Light Background Floral squares in a row and then sew a half-square triangle unit to the right side of these. See block graphic above for correct placement. The Light Floral triangle is in the upper left hand corner of the unit. Press the seam away from the half-square triangle unit and then press the next seam toward the half-square triangle unit and the last seam the opposite direction. You may also press your seams open, since there will be a lot of bulk where the triangle units meet. The next row has two Light Background Floral Squares, one half-square triangle unit and a Dark Background Floral square. Join these and press seams away from the half-square triangle unit and the remaining seam toward the unit. This will allow the seams of the first and second row to align easier, since they will be pressed in opposite directions. Join the first and second rows and press the seam open.

The third row has a Light Background Floral square, a half-square triangle unit and then two Dark Background Floral squares. Sew these together and press seams away from the half-square triangle unit and the other seam toward the unit. Join to the previous two rows and press the seam open. The fourth row has a half-square triangle unit and three Dark Background Floral squares. Join these and press the first seam away from the half-square triangle unit. Press the next seam toward the unit and the last seam away from the unit. Join to the previous three rows and press the seams open. Repeat for the second block. Your blocks should match the block graphic above.

We are making TWO blocks for November. The blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. By now you should have all sent in your Priority stamp and mailing label. And remember that if you haven't won yet, Priority postage has gone up and it would be nice if you sent an additional 55 cent stamp to Patty to help with postage prices. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN BOM Group or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
