October 2007 Block

Amish Old Maid's Puzzle

Tips & Hints

For October we are doing another "Blast From the Past" block. This was the February 1998 block, before we had our own website. Use two solid-looking fabrics like Moda Marble or some other hand-dyed looking fabric. They should not be too dark as you want to see them against the Moda Marble black background. You will be making THREE blocks for October, as this is the month for Patty's "thank you" block.

Cutting directions for THREE blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
37" x 7"Amish Color 1
64" x 4"Amish Color 2
123 1/2" x 3 1/2"Moda Marble Black
37" x 7"Moda Marble Black
64" x 4"Moda Marble Black

Place a 7" x 7" Moda Marble Black square right sides together with an Amish Color 1 square. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner. Sew a scant quarter inch on each side of the line. Cut on the line and press the two units toward the black triangle. Trim to 6 1/2" x 6 1/2", making sure the seam goes from corner to opposite corner. Repeat twice more for the other two blocks. Repeat the previous steps with the 4" x 4" Moda Marble Black squares and the Amish Color 2 squares. Trim to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". You will have a total of 12 of the smaller units, four per block.

Sew a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" Moda Marble Black square to the side of a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" half square triangle unit. See block graphic above for correct placement. All the squares are sewn to the half square triangle units the same way. The square is on the left and the half square triangle unit has the colored triangle in the lower left position. Press toward the black fabric. Flip two of the previous units around and sew to the units that were not flipped. (See block graphic for correct placement.) The tips of the triangles will be touching and the black triangles will be in the upper right and lower left positions. Press seams toward the colored triangles. There will be a tiny four-patch formed in the center of the wrong side of the unit. Repeat the previous steps twice more for a total of six units, two per block.

Sew one of the previous units to the left side of a 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" half square triangle unit. See block graphic above for correct placement. The large colored triangle will be in the lower left position. Press away from the large triangle unit. Repeat for the second row. Sew the two rows together, flipping the second row. Press toward the large triangle units. A small four patch will form in the middle of the seam on the wrong side. Repeat twice more for a total of three blocks.

We are making THREE blocks for October. The blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished. Do not trim your blocks. Let the winners of the blocks trim them as necessary when they set them into a quilt top. And remember to label your blocks (sticky address label is a good method). Send your blocks to Patty. The blocks should be mailed a week before the end of the month. By now you should have all sent in your Priority stamp and mailing label. And remember that if you haven't won yet, Priority postage has gone up and it would be nice if you sent an additional 55 cent stamp to Patty to help with postage prices. If your blocks are late, you won't be in the drawing for that month and you'll cause more expense and work for Patty. Another reminder, all blocks should be made with 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabrics that have been washed, dried and pressed.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN club or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo).
