August 2005 Block

Clambake Shadows

Tips & Hints

This month's theme is something about a clambake! (Patty, what were you thinking??!!) Here's a Sunshine and Shadows block. The large triangle is Kona Snow and the strips are whatever fabric reminds you of a clambake (picnic??). Could be food, fish, tableclothes, insects, whatever. Have fun!!

Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:

NumberSizeFabric
113" x 13"Kona Snow
218" x 2 5/8"Print
214" x 2 5/8"Print
49 1/2" x 2 5/8"Print
25 1/2" x 3"Print

Cut the Kona Snow square corner to corner diagonally once. Sew the 18" strip to the diagonal side of the square. When matching the strips, find the center of each strip and match those up. Be careful with this seam, as the Kona Snow is on the bias. I had good luck sewing with the Kona triangle on the bottom. Press seam away from the Kona triangle. I use a little spray sizing and a dry iron when I'm pressing. Take care not to stretch the seam or distort the block.

Sew a 14" strip to the previous strip. Press away from the previous strip. Sew a 9 1/2" strip to the previous strip. Press away from the previous strip. Sew a 5 1/2" strip to the previous strip. Press away from the previous strips.

Trim the block to 12 1/2" x 12 1/2", making sure the diagonal seam goes exactly to the opposite corners of the block. If you don't have a ruler large enough to trim accurately, it's okay to leave the blocks untrimmed and let the winners square them up.

Repeat piecing instructions for the second block.

Remember to label your blocks with at least your name (city, state, and email address are optional) on the BACK of your block. This may be a piece of paper tacked on, a sticky label or pigma pen in the seam allowance. No straight pins, please. Safety pins are okay. Just be sure to label them in some way. This ensures that you get credit for your blocks and lets the winner know who made each block. This is not optional!!

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN club or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo). You will be making TWO blocks for June. Blocks will be due to Patty by the last week of August. Please mail your blocks by August 21st so that your blocks will arrive on time. You must be current with your blocks to be in the drawing.
