June 2005 Block

Wedding Ring

Tips & Hints

This month's theme is "We've Only Just Begun". What better block for this than a Wedding Ring variation, one without any curves!! The ring is a gold print, the background is a fabric that goes with your gold print and the signature area is Kona Snow.

Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:

22 1/2" x 8 1/2"Kona Snow
85 1/2" x 5 1/2"gold print
82 1/2" x 2 1/2"gold print
84 1/2" x 4 1/2"background print
83 1/2" x 3 1/2"background print
42 1/2" x 3 1/2"background

Place a gold 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" square right side up. Make snowball corners at opposite corners, using a 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" background square for one and a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" background square for the other. Click here for instructions for making snowball corners. Be sure to press the first snowball corner back to the corner before you sew the second one, or it might get caught in the stitching. Make three more of these units for the four corners of the block.

Sew a gold 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square to the end of a 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" background rectangle. Press toward the gold fabric. Make one more. Sew one of the previous units between two corner units, making sure the larger snowball corners are in the upper left and upper right positions. (See block graphic above for correct placement.) Press the seams open. Make another of the previous unit for the bottom row.

Sew a gold 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square to each end of a Kona Snow 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangle. Press toward the gold fabric. Sew this unit between the top and bottom rows. Press the seams open. (See block graphic above for correct placement.)

Repeat piecing instructions for the second block.

Remember to label your blocks with at least your name (city, state, and email address are optional) on the BACK of your block. This may be a piece of paper tacked on, a sticky label or pigma pen in the seam allowance. No straight pins, please. Safety pins are okay. Just be sure to label them in some way. This ensures that you get credit for your blocks and lets the winner know who made each block. This is not optional.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN club or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo). You will be making TWO blocks for June. Blocks will be due to Patty by the last week of June. Please mail your blocks by June 21st so that your blocks will arrive on time. You must be current with your blocks to be in the drawing.
