Tips & Hints
Our April friendship block is pretty floral basket with a large space between the basket and the handles for some fun quilting. The background is Kona Snow and the basket is a medium to large floral print. No tiny calicoes, please. Try to find something from your stash.
Cutting directions for TWO blocks are below:
Cut all squares in half diagonally to make triangles. Place one of your larger Kona Snow triangles so the shorter legs of the triangle face up and to the left. (See block graphic above.) Sew a 1 1/2" x 8" floral rectangle to the top of the triangle right sides together, matching the cut edges at the left side. Press toward the floral rectangle. The other side of the rectangle will be longer than the triangle and will be trimmed later. Add a 1 1/2" x 9" floral rectangle to the left side of the previous unit matching the cut edges. Press toward the floral rectangle. Add a 1 1/2" x 10" Kona rectangle to the top of the previous unit in the same manner. Press toward the Kona piece. Add a 1 1/2" x 11" Kona rectangle to the left of the previous unit, press toward the Kona piece. This is the handle unit.
Lay a large floral triangle on the previous unit, right sides together, matching the edges of the triangle to the handle unit. Trim the handle unit to match the large triangle, along the longer side of the triangle. Sew this seam carefully, as it is on the bias. Press toward the floral triangle. Sew a small floral triangle to one side of each of 2 - 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" Kona rectangles. These will make the base of the basket and go in opposite directions. (See the block graphic above for correct placement.) Press toward the floral. Sew these units to each side of the basket, matching placement in the block graphic. Press toward the large floral triangle. Sew the remaining Kona triangle to the base of the basket. This is also a bias seam, so be careful not to stretch it. Press toward the Kona triangle. Repeat for the second block.
Remember to label your blocks with at least your name (city, state, and email address are optional) on the BACK of your block. This may be a piece of paper tacked on, a sticky label or pigma pen in the seam allowance. No straight pins, please. Safety pins are okay. Just be sure to label them in some way. This ensures that you get credit for your blocks and lets the winner know who made each block. This is not optional.
If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN club or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo). You will be making TWO blocks for April. Blocks will be due to Patty by the last week of April. Please mail your blocks by April 21st so that your blocks will arrive on time. You must be current with your blocks to be in the drawing.
