April 2004 Block

Floral Jack's Delight

Tips & Hints

Here's the April block. Cathy picked out this one. It's called Jack's Delight in the Barbara Brackman book. You will be making TWO blocks for April. Click here to see Cathy's sample blocks. The yellow one did not have enough contrast.

For your blocks you will need a large floral print fabric and a coordinating medium or dark, jewel colored fabric and light print fabric for the background. Some of the measurements are a little tricky, so I'm including a foundation for the two half-square triangle units, including the corner triangle (four in all) and templates. (I am not including a template for the center square, as it does not fit the template sheet.) Foundations and Templates. Cutting instructions below are for BOTH blocks.

26 1/8" x 6 1/8"Large Floral Print
44 7/8" x 4 7/8"Jewel Color Print
15 1/4" x 5 1/4"Jewel Color Print
84" x 4"Jewel Color Print
15 1/4" x 5 1/4"Light Print
84" x 4"Light Print

We'll start with the half-square triangle units first. Place a jewel colored fabric and a light fabric 4" x 4" square right sides together. Draw a light pencil line on the back of the light square, from corner to opposite corner. Sew a scant 1/4" on each side of the line. Cut along the pencil line, and press open, with the seam toward the dark fabric. Trim to 3 5/16" x 3 5/16" (this is between the 1/4" and 3/8" marks on your ruler), making sure the seam goes from one corner to the opposite corner. Repeat three more times. You will have eight half-square triangle units. Repeat for the second block.

Sew the half-square triangle units from the previous step into sets of two. The triangles will be going one way in two sets and the other way in the remaining two sets. See the block graphic above for correct placement. Press the seams open. There will be four sets for each block.

Cut the jewel colored, 4 7/8" x 4 7/8" squares in half diagonally. Sew one to each half-square triangle unit, on the side with the light triangles. (See block graphic above.) Press seams toward the jewel colored triangle. Repeat for all the half-square triangle units. Sew two of the previous units to opposite sides of the floral 6 1/8" x 6 1/8" square. Press toward the square. Repeat for the other block.

Cut the dark and light 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" squares in half diagonally and then diagonally the other way, being careful not to move them while you're cutting. Sew a light triangle to the right side of a remaining half-square triangle unit and a dark triangle to the left side, as in the block graphic above. Repeat for the remaining three units. Sew these units to each side of the units created in the previous paragraph, matching the seams. Press toward the floral square. Repeat for the second block.

Your blocks should measure 12 1/2" x 12 1/2". Click here to see a photo of the front of the test block I made. Click here to see the back.

Remember to label your blocks with at least your name (city, state, and email address are optional) on the BACK of your block. This may be a piece of paper tacked or pinned on, a sticky label or pigma pen in the seam allowance. Just be sure to label them in some way. This ensures that you get credit for your blocks and lets the winner know who made each block. This is not optional.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN club or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo). You will be making TWO blocks for April. Blocks will be due to Patty by the last week of April. You must be current with your blocks to be in the drawing.
