Blue & Yellow Nine Patch
Tips & Hints
As I promised, here is the June block. It's really simple, just a nine-patch. But it's possible to make a nine-patch badly. My tips for making a perfect nine-patch include cutting the patches accurately, sewing with a scant quarter inch seam and pressing seams in opposite directions for easy joining. This month we are making SCRAPPY nine-patches from blue and yellow prints. I'm showing a possible setting in the quilt graphic below with blue and yellow hourglass blocks.
For EACH block: cut five 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares from assorted blue prints and cut four 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares from assorted yellow prints.
Sew a yellow square between two blue squares. Press toward the blue square. Repeat. Sew a blue square between two yellow squares. Press toward the blue squares.
Sew the unit with the blue square in the middle between the two units with the yellow square in the middle. The seams will be opposing and will "nestle" up to one another. Be sure your seams match. Another tip is to sew the seam first with a longer stitch so you can pick it out easily in case the seams don't meet the first time. Press the seams out.
Your block should measure 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" (unfinished). I'm not including any block scans because I'm going on vacation and that's all I have time for. And this block is easy and should be something a quilter can piece with "one hand tied behind her back". Click here to see a scan of the front of the test block I made. Click here to see the back.
Remember to label your blocks with at least your name (city, state, and email address are optional) on the BACK of your block. This may be a piece of paper tacked or pinned on, a sticky label or pigma pen in the seams. Just be sure to label them in some way. This ensures that you get credit for your blocks and lets the winner know who made each block.
If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN Club or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo). You will be making TWO blocks for June. Please do NOT trim your blocks. Blocks will be due to Patty by the 29th of June. Patty and I will be getting together to open "squishies" July 6th so please get your blocks to her before then.
