August 2001 Block

30's Nine-Patch/Snowball

Tips & Hints

As promised, I have posted the August block before I leave for vacation. The colors this month are bright 30's reproduction prints and white-on-white print for the background. Please try to make the middle square of the nine-patch a yellow print for a little continuity. Otherwise, you may be as scrappy as you wish. As you can see from the quilt graphic at the bottom of the page, this block looks great scrappy.

For your blocks you will need an assortment of bright 30's reproduction prints (at least one of them yellow) and white on white print for the background (can be scrappy). For EACH block: cut from white on white print - 8 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and 2 squares 6 1/2" x 6 1/2". Cut from yellow 30's print or prints 2 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" (can be different) and from assorted 30's prints 16 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".

Sew two nine patches, with the yellow square in the middle and the assorted print squares in the corners. The white on white squares go in between (see block graphic.) Press toward the 30's prints and then away from the middle row. Sew two snowball blocks by placing a 30's print square on each corner of a large white square, with the edges even and right sides together. Sew diagonally across the small square and press it toward the corner. You may trim out one or both extra layers to cut down on bulk, but be careful not to trim the top snowball corner. (See block graphic.)

Assemble by sewing each nine patch to a snowball. Press toward the nine-patch. Sew the rows together. (See block graphic.) Press seam to one side or open. That's it. Now make the other one!! If you have any questions or comments, email me or post a note on the MSN BOM Community. I'll be back on August 1st, but Patty will be back July 21st. Happy piecing.

Remember to label your blocks with at least your name (city, state, and email address are optional) on the BACK of your block. This may be a piece of paper tacked or pinned on, a sticky label or pigma pen in the seams. Just be sure to label them in some way. This ensures that you get credit for your blocks and lets the winner know who made each block.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the MSN club or email Squirrel (Patty) or AzPatch (Margo). You will be making TWO blocks for August. Blocks will be due to Patty by the end of August. Patty and I will be getting together to open "squishies" September 1st so please try to get your blocks in earlier in the week.

If you have Electric Quilt 4, the zipped file is available for download here. I may be a little late uploading the EQ4 file and I'll try to get the June and July files done too when I get back.
