Tips & Hints
This month's block is a 10 1/2" block. (That is - 11" unfinished.) This month we're making flags in Americana colors. Americana colors are darker and richer than primary colors. Instead of royal blue, use deep french blue or a light to medium navy. Instead of red, use a deeper, richer red, possibly a barn or brick red. Instead of white use beige or tan. See the block and quilt graphics for ideas. We will be doing TWO blocks for July.
For EACH block cut: Four rectangles 11" x 2" - two from red print and two from beige or tan print. Three rectangles 6 1/2" x 2" - two from red print and one from beige or tan print. Nine squares 2" x 2" - five from beige or tan print and four from blue print.
Sew the sides of the four longer rectangles together, alternating red and beige. Sew the sides of the shorter rectangles together, with the beige one in the middle. Press seams toward the red fabric. The longer unit should measure 11" x 6 1/2" unfinished. The shorter unit should measure 6 1/2" x 5" unfinished. Sew a blue square between two beige squares. Repeat. Sew a beige square between two blue squares. Press seams toward the blue fabric. Sew the previous units together to make a nine-patch. A beige square will be in the center. See block graphic for correct placement. Press seams toward the center. The nine-patch unit should measure 5" x 5" unfinished.
Sew the nine-patch unit to the side of the shorter rectangle unit. Press the seam toward the nine-patch unit. This unit should measure 11" x 5" unfinished. Sew the previous unit to the longer rectangle unit, using the block graphic for correct placement. Press seam toward the red fabric. Your unfinished block should measure 11" x 11".

Remember to label your blocks with your name, city, state, and email address on the BACK of your block. This may be a piece of paper tacked or pinned on, a sticky label or pigma pen in the seam allowance. Just be sure to label them in some way.
If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo club or email Squirrel (Patty) or Azpatch (Margo). You will be making TWO blocks for July. Blocks will be due to Patty by July 31, 2000. Patty and I will be getting together at the Quilted Apple on August 5 for Baltimore Masters and Applique Lovers clubs. Please keep up with your blocks. If you get behind it makes more work for Patty and I to send them out to the winners late. If lateness is unavoidable, please let one of us know and remember to include two stamps to help with postage.
If you have Electric Quilt 4, the file is available for download here. I didn't use scanned fabrics this time so the size is only 13 KB.
