Flying Squares

Tips & Hints

This block is a 10" block. (That is - 10 1/2" unfinished.) Use light and dark purple print fabrics (no solids, please). Refer to the block graphic above for light and dark placement.

This block is easy to put together, to give everyone a rest after the August block. Cut five 2 1/2" squares of assorted light purple prints. Cut eight 2 1/2" squares of assorted dark purple prints. Cut four 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangles of assorted light purple prints.

Sew one end of each light purple rectangle to a dark purple square. Press toward the dark fabric. Sew a dark purple square between two light purple squares. Repeat. Sew a light purple square between two dark purple squares. Press toward the dark fabric. Sew these three units together to make a nine-patch with the light squares in the corners and the middle. Press both seams toward the center.

Now sew one rectangle unit to the side of the nine-patch unit, using the block graphic for correct placement. You will sew from the dark square on the rectangle unit to about one inch from the end of the nine-patch. This will be the only partial seam you will sew. Sew the other rectangle units to each side of the nine-patch and then sew the rest of the partial seam. Press seams toward the outside. Check your block to make sure it matches the block graphic. Your block should measure 10 1/2" square.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo club or email Squirrel or Azpatch . You will be making two blocks for September. Blocks will be due to Patty by September 24th.
