Pine Tree

Tips & Hints

This block is a 10" block. (That is - 10 1/2" unfinished.) This block is made of green print fabric for the tree with an ecru-on-ecru background. You may make this block scrappy or not, whatever you think looks best. I think the blocks will all go well together, since they will be green. You could even make the trunk brown if you want. You will be making a total of TWO blocks this month.

For EACH block, make 14 2 1/2"x2 1/2" half-square triangle units with green print and ecru-on-ecru fabric (using your favorite method), cut two 2 1/2"x2 1/2" ecru-on-ecru squares. Cut a rectangle 1 7/8"x4 7/8" from green (or brown, if you prefer) print fabric for the trunk. The following will produce pieces for both blocks. Cut one green print square 6 7/8"x6 7/8". Cut in half diagonally once. Cut one ecru-on-ecru square 6 1/4"x6 1/4". Cut in half diagonally twice.

For the first row, sew four half-square triangle units together, with the green fabric in the lower left position (see graphic above for correct placement. Sew an ecru-on-ecru square to the left of this unit. Press toward the green fabric. For the second row, sew three half-square triangle units together, in the same position as the previous row. Sew an ecru-on-ecru square to the left of this unit and then another half-square triangle unit to the left of the resulting unit. Press toward the green fabric. Sew the first and second rows together. See graphic above for placement. You may want to press this seam open to reduce bulk. Sew two more units of three half-square triangle units each using graphic above for correct placement. (These will go to the left of the large triangle.) Sew these two rows together.

Sew an ecru-on-ecru triangle to each side of a trunk piece using block graphic for correct placement. Press toward the green fabric. Sew this unit to a large green triangle. Press toward the green fabric. Trim this unit to measure 6 1/2"x6 1/2". Sew this square unit to the two rows of three half-square triangle units. Press toward the large triangle. Sew this unit to the first two rows. Press toward the large triangle. Check your block to make sure it matches the block graphic. Your block should measure 10 1/2" square.

If you have questions or comments, post a note on the Yahoo club or email Squirrel or Azpatch . You will be making two blocks for November. Blocks will be due to Patty by October 26th.
